4th Sunday Of Advent - Year A - Bringing Jesus Into the World & “Away In A Manger”
“This is how the birth of Jesus came about.”
That’s how Matthew begins the story. No angels singing. No shepherds running. No manger yet. Just a simple statement—and a quiet ending: Joseph wakes up from a dream and names the child Jesus.
That’s it. Or is it?
Matthew skips the details we love and goes straight to what matters most. His Gospel isn’t just telling us what happened long ago—it’s showing us how Jesus comes into the world, even now.
First, it takes faith. Matthew begins with a miracle: a child conceived by the Holy Spirit. This reminds us that God still works in surprising ways. Advent invites us to put down our skepticism, loosen our grip on control, and make room for wonder. Christmas doesn’t begin in a store—it begins in mystery and love.
Second, it takes courage. Joseph hears the same words Mary heard: “Do not be afraid.” Trusting God isn’t always comfortable. Welcoming Christ means pushing past fear, doubt, and cynicism. Like Joseph, we’re asked to believe that God really is with us—even when the future feels uncertain.
Finally, it takes being awake. Joseph wakes up—and then he acts. He doesn’t overthink. He doesn’t delay. He quietly does what God asks. That’s Advent spirituality in a nutshell: paying attention and responding with trust.
Joseph names the child Jesus, making God’s saving presence known. We’re invited to do the same—not just with carols and decorations, but by how we live, forgive, and love every day of the year.
Matthew isn’t just telling us how Christmas happened. He’s teaching us how to make it happen again.
Faith. Courage. Wakefulness.
That’s how Jesus still comes into the world—and that’s how Advent prepares our hearts for Emmanuel, God with us.
In honor of the upcoming Christmas season, we would like to share our latest video, “Away In A Manger”, one of the most cherished Christmas carols, traditionally associated with heartfelt nativity scenes. Its lyrics reflect on the humility of the newborn Jesus, resting in a manger and watched over in love.
This version was recorded live at our recent 2025 St. Francis de Sales Christmas Concert! More tracks to be shared over time and thanks to all those who attended and supported our Parish, it was a beautiful and prayerful event.
