29th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year A - God’s Stamp Is On You & “Go Make A Difference”

Have you ever noticed how quickly we recognize what belongs to us? Put our name on a coffee cup, a favorite chair, or even a parking spot, and suddenly it becomes very important! We know what is ours, and we are happy to claim it.

But in this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus invites us to consider a deeper question: What belongs to God?

The Pharisees try to trap Jesus with a question about paying taxes to Caesar. Seeing through their intentions, Jesus asks for a coin, points to Caesar’s image, and declares, “Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.”

It is a brilliant answer, but Jesus is doing more than settling a debate about tHave you ever noticed how quickly we recognize what belongs to us? But in this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus invites us to consider a deeper question: What belongs to God?

The Pharisees try to trap Jesus with a question about paying taxes to Caesar. Seeing through their intentions, Jesus asks for a coin, points to Caesar’s image, and declares, “Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.”

It is a brilliant answer, but Jesus is doing more than settling a debate about taxes. He invites us to examine our lives and ask where our deepest allegiance belongs.

The coin bears Caesar’s image. But what bears the image of God? We do!

Genesis reminds us that every human person is created in the image and likeness of God. Our gifts, relationships, and capacity to love, forgive, and serve are opportunities to reflect His goodness to the world. This is where the Gospel becomes personal.

We can be very good at giving God what is left over: a little time when we are not too busy, a little attention when we are not distracted, and a few prayers when we remember. God welcomes every prayer, however small, but perhaps Jesus is inviting us to do more than fit Him into the margins of our lives. He invites us to put Him at the center.

This does not mean abandoning our daily responsibilities. We still have bills to pay, families to care for, work to do, and appointments we would rather forget! Faith does not remove us from the world; Faith teaches us how to live in it with a different heart.

We honor God through honesty at work, patience with difficult people, generosity toward those in need, and forgiveness when holding a grudge seems easier. Often, giving God what belongs to Him means doing ordinary things with extraordinary love.

However, if we are made in God's image, can others recognize something of Him in us? Can they see His kindness in our words, His mercy in our forgiveness, and His compassion in how we treat those who have nothing to offer us in return?

We do not always get it right. We become distracted, impatient, and sometimes a little too convinced that our way is the only way! But God never stops calling us back to Himself. His grace gives us the opportunity to begin again and reflect His love a little more clearly each day.

So, let us give Caesar his coin, fulfil our responsibilities, and be good citizens of this world. But let us never forget that we were created for God, loved by God, and called to bring His love into a world that desperately needs it.

Perhaps the real question is not simply, “What belongs to God?” but “What am I doing with the life God has given me?”

The answer can begin with a kind word, a generous gesture, a patient response, or the courage to reach out to someone who feels forgotten. Through these simple acts, others may catch a glimpse of God's goodness.

We may carry coins in our pockets, but we carry God's image in our hearts. May we live so that the world recognizes whose we are, not merely by the words we speak, but by our actions that make a difference and the love we leave behind.

In honor of World Mission Sunday, we would like to share our latest video. “Go Make a Difference” by Steve Angrisano and Tom Tomaszek is an uplifting Catholic hymn based on Matthew 5:13–16, calling us to become the salt of the earth and the light of the world by sharing our God-given gifts through lives of faith and service.

As we leave the Eucharist, this joyful song sends us out to make our faith visible; serving those in need, bringing hope where there is darkness, and allowing Christ to work through our unique gifts.
