21st Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year C - The Secret of the Narrow Door & ‘Behold the Lamb’

The image of the narrow gate presented in this weekend’s Gospel (Lk. 13:22-30) offers encouragement and perspective. It is common to reflect on salvation and consider who will attain entry to heaven, including concern for ourselves and curiosity about the total number of those who might be saved. The Gospel addresses this question directly: “…will there only be a few saved?

Jesus provides a candid response, advising preparedness to enter through the narrow door, as success is not guaranteed for everyone who attempts it. While one may knock at the door, admission ultimately rests with the master’s discretion, underlining the importance of remaining mindful of this reality.

Two principal points emerge from this narrative. Firstly, there exists a definitive path to salvation—those able to pass through the narrow door will be secure. The presence of such a door signals hope; its absence would signify confusion and disorder. Secondly, entry is often challenging. It is not appropriate to assume universal ease of access. Individuals may encounter difficulties, select alternative paths, or misuse the freedom granted to them.

Nonetheless, it is essential to appreciate the broader significance of the narrow gate. Notably, Jesus' audience in his time did not appear troubled by the selective nature of the narrow door. Social and religious norms commonly distinguished gates and points of entry. The notion that a gate could be accessible to all, regardless of wealth or status, was an exceptional concept for Jesus’ listeners—an idea that remains noteworthy even now.

Furthermore, gates are typically associated with specific locations; however, the message here invites us to envision a gate not limited to one place but accessible wherever the Lord is present. This interpretation expands the opportunity for entry, enabling a greater number of people to utilize the gate and significantly improving the prospects for salvation. The gate, as described by Jesus, refers to one that is open to anyone, irrespective of background or standing.

When concerns arise about the number of individuals who will be saved, the emphasis should shift toward personal discipleship and adherence to Christ's teachings. By focusing on these principles, one aligns with the correct path and increases the likelihood of passing through the narrow door. Meanwhile, it is worthwhile to recognize and appreciate how substantially the odds are in our favor.

We are honored to share our latest video, "Behold the Lamb", a beloved communion hymn often sung during the Eucharist at Catholic Mass to reflect on Christ’s presence in the Blessed Sacrament. Written in the 1980s, this song has become a staple in Catholic worship worldwide, inviting the faithful to share in the mystery of the Lamb of God.
